' HOCKEY - The following players have been selected to go on tour through the Hawke's Bay district, leaving Masterton, on Thursday, August 12, and returning on the following Monday: -—Fisher (3), TunniclifTe (2), Morgan, Boyd, Sievers, A. Dixon, Minett, Reid, Eagle, Smith, Scrimgeour, Hall, Pragnell, Reynolds, King and Gray Any player who cannot make the trip is requested to notify the Secretary not later than Thursday next. If there are any other players who are not mentioned in the above team that would make the trip, they are requested to cornmun;cate with the Secretary.
FOOTBALL. SENIOR CHAMPIONSHIP. RED STAR v. CARTERTON Red Stnr and Carterton teams met in the third round of the Wairarapa i Kugby Uuions Senior Championship j at Carterton, on Saturday last, and a i hard-fought game ended in favour of | Red Star by 11 points to 8 points. | Shortly after the start of the game ! the Carterton forwards became dan- ' gerous. and after a lot of foot work ! Sievers took a mark under the Star's ' K oal, but the kick by N. McKenzie I went wide. Again the Carterton furJ wards charged, but hard kicking , sent the ball into the dead-ball area, j a try being missed by a very narrow I margin. After play had been up and down the field for some time Fairbrother put in a good run, and scored near the corner,Masson's kick at goal proving unsuccessful. Play centred and from smart following up K. McKenzie scored between the posts Ball piloted the leather between the uprights. For the rest of the spell play was very fast, and particularly noticeable for tne individual rushes by members of both teams. From one of these rushesß.McKenzie broke away and again scored between the po3ts, the kick *t goal going wide. The spell ended with the Red Stars attacking, and the score Red Stars 8, Carterton 5. In the second spell the Stars with the wind in their favour were nearly always on the attack, and kept their opponents busy defending their goal line. From a scrum A. Ross got away, and after a brilliant ruti was collared within a yard of the line. The Carterton forwards started a good passing rush, which resulted in N. McKenzie crossing the line, no goal resulting The black and whites were not to be outdone, and their efforts were rewarded when R. McKenzie again crossed the Carterton line, making his third try during the match. The kick at goal went wide. After this play became very fast and exciting. Carterton made determined efforts to score, but they were repulsed by the Star backs, P. McLacblan in particular doing splendid work for his side. The game ended wi»th the Stars attacking, the scores reading—Red Star] 11, Carterton 8.
Mr E. McKenziy made an excellent referee. GREYTOWN v. GLADSTONE. Gladstone were defeated on their own ground by Greytown on Saturday last by 8 points to 3 points.. Neither team was fully represented, Momo, Cadwallader, Nitz and Kummer being absent from Gladstone, and J. and N. Skeet from Greytown teams Tries were scored for Greytowa by O. Skeet and T. Jury, one of which was converted by E. Skeet. A try was scored by E. Mason for Gladstone. JUNIOR. RED STAR v. LIBERALS. At Carterton, on Saturday, Red Star Juniors had a walk-over in their match with Liberal Juniors, the scores being 24 points to nil in favour of Stars. Tries were scored by Billington (3). Golder (2), Ibbetson, Wing and Stewart. Mr J. McKenzie controlled the game. CARTERTON v. GREYTOWN.
The Carterton Juniors defeated the Greytown Juniors, at Greytvvon, on Saturday, by 17 points to 10 points. For the winners G. Offsoski ;2), G. Foreman (2) and Fairbrother, scored tries, one of which J. Crawley converted, and for Greytown Fuller scored two tries, which were both converted by Hector.
THIRD-CLASS. MASTERTON v. DALEFIELD. Masterton and Dalefield Third-class teams met at the latter place en Saturday, when Masterton were victorious by 12 points to nil. Billington and E. Simonson scored tries, one of which E. Fisher converted, and Carmine potted a goal. Mr J. Higgins was referpe. RED STAR v. CARTERTON. The Red Star Thirds defeated Carterton Thirds, on the Masterton Showgrounds, by 14 points to nil. Tries were scored by Morris (2), Ah Lop and McHattie, one being converted by Morris.

NELSON, July 31. The annual representative match, Nelson versus Marlborough, played here to-day, was won by the visitors by 15 points to nil. WELLINGTON, August 1. The Association football match, Canterbury (challengers) versus Wellington, yesterday, for the Brown Shield, resulted in a . draw, two goals each.
