FIRE IN A THEATRE.

NAKROW ESCAPE FROM OBSTRUCTION.

Received August 2, 12.55 a.m. SYDNEY, August 1

Her Majesty's Theatre had a narrow escape from destruction by fire to-day.

A fire started in the gallery, and spread upwards to the dome, and when the brigade arrived the gallery was well alight, but within 25 minutes the fire was extinguished.

Damage was done by fire and water to the extent of £3,000. The theatre will be closed for a fortnight.

The origin of the fire is a mystery. When the night watchman went off duty this morning there was no trace of fire. Five hours later smoke was issuing from the building.
