MATCH AGAINST COMBINED TEAM.

To-day the Australian cricketers began a match at Hull against a team selected from the Yorkshire and Lancashire County Clubs. The weather was dull, and the wicket soft.

Australians—M'Alister, Trumper, Barisley, Macartney, Laver, Ransford, Cotter, O'Connor, Whitty, Carkeek, and Hopkins. Yorkshire and Lancashire—Hornby, Spooner, Hartley, Huddleston, Tyldesley, Denton, Rhodes, Haigh, Makepeace, Newstead and Hunter. Sharp was originally selected to play, but was indisposed. Hornby, captain of the combined team, won the toss, and Spooner and Hartley wen! to the wickets. Spooner ga«e an exhibition of bright play. He commenced by hitting three fourers off Macartney, but Hartley lost his wicket trying to pull Laver. One for 36. Changes in the bowling did not deter Spnoner, who was scoring freely by attractive cricket. His half-century was compiled in 65 minutes. Denton opened quickly. Light rain began to fall, and delayed the game for 15 minutes. Both batsmen kept their wickets up till the adjournment for lunch. After more showers the weather brightened. The second over after lunch disposed of Spooner. He put up an easy catch to mid-off, off a kicking ball. His innings was marked by fine driving, and his score included six fourers. Two for 113.

Tyldesley \ joined Dencon, but did not stay long. Denton doing most of the scoring. Three for 138. Denton, who had batted with freedom, gave a soft one to Trumper in the slips, after batting for 105 minutes. He gave'a chance when he had made 31. His hits included six tourers. Four for 157.

Rhodes came next. He played neat all round cricket, and scored quickly. The second century was registered in 190 minutes.

Rhodes and Makepeace carried the Counties' score to 261, whan a downpour of rain stopped play, and stumps were drawn for the day.

Makepeace was missed in the blips when he had made 15, by Trumpsr, off Hopkins. Scores:— YORKSHIRE AND LANCASHIRE. First Innings.
