In a paragraph in yesterday's issue referring to the late Mr Jas. Vile it was erroneously stated that the deceased was a relative of the late Mr Job Vile. The friends of Mrs G. Bruce, who has bsen in the Maaterton Hospital for some time will regret to hear that her condition is still causing a good deal of anxiety to her friends, writes our Kopuaranga correspondent. k,The death is reported in Palmerston, telegraphs the correspondents of the "Post," of Mrs Beere, wife of the late Mr Geo. Beere, of Masterton, aged 53. She leaves a family of five--Mr A. Beere, of Palmerston, and Mesdames Wing, Hotter, -Williams and Simmonds, of Wellington. Captain Harry Adams, of Sydney, and Captain Mary Clemens, of Ashburton, were married by Colonel ' Knight, commanding the province, < at the Salvation Army Citadel, in Wellington, on Sunday. The build- . me was crowded. Sir Chas. Lucas ard Mr A. A. , Pearson, the Colonial Office representatives, are to be entertained at ' lunch by the Ministry at "Bellamy's," to-duy. The Acting-Minister of Lands ( (Hon. D. Budclo) left for the South ( last evening to have a meeting with the South Canterbury members of ' Parliament with reference to the : disposal of some large grazing runs, | the leases of which expire next year. , Private advices received by this ( week's English mail state that the Hon T. Kennedy Macdonald, who Jhft Welingtpn on « ftealth-recjuiting i trip, arrived in London on June 12th, greatly improved in health. Mr W. F. Massey, Leader of the , Oposition, will arrive in Welhrgton by the Main Trunk express irom Auck'and this afternoon. On Thursday evenhig he will attend the "sorial ' giving by the w< men's Iraich <f the New Zealand Political Reform League. The Hon. J Carroll will be entertained at a large Native gathering at Papawai tu-day, in honour of his accession to the position of ActingPrime Minister. In addition to representatives of all the tribes in the Wairarapa, the tribes in the Hawke's Bay district will also be fully represented. During the course of the proceedings Mr Carroll will be presented with an address. He will return to Wellington either to-day or tomorrow morning. An old resident of Nelson, Mr W. T. Miller of the Monumental Works, passed away at an early hour on Monday morning, at the age of 72 years. He leaves a family of nine to mourn their loss, thre6 of whom reside in Masterton, viz , Mr T. W. Miller, late of the Club Stables, Mrs J Cross and Mrs W. Allen. Messrs W. Miller, G. Miller. H. Miller, Mrs G. Richardson, Miss C. Miller, and Miss R. Miller, of Nelson, are other surviving children. The Dunedin "Star" announces (reports a Press Association telegram) that Mr A. Crooke, barrister and solicitor, of Lawrence, has been appointed to the magistracy. Mr Crooke, who retired from active practice eighteen months ago, has few equals in mining law." Mr Crooke was born in 1854, in Guildford, Surrey, England, where he received his early education. He proceeded to Queen's College, Cambridge, and graduated B.n. in 1878, and L.M. in 1880. After studying for the legal profession at the Middle Temple he was called to the Bar in May, 1882. In October of the same year, Mr Crooke sailed for -New Zealand, and arrived at Port Chalmers. He practiced for a short time in Dunedin, and then settled in Lawrence. He married in 1890 a daughter of Mr James Smith, of Greenfield, and has three daughters.
