PERSONAL.
The death is announced of Mr Robert Crichton, son of the late Sergeant Crichton, of the Imperial forces, and brother of Mr Jas. Crichton, formerly conductor of the Wanganui Garrison Band. The deceased who was 49 years of age, died as the result of an operation a few days ago. The death occurred on Sunday of the lion. Henry de Bohun Devereaux, second son of the late fifteenth Viscount Hereford, at hi.? residence, Epsom, Auckland, aged 60 years. The deceased, who, until lately, was connected with the Customs Department, leaves a widow and three sons and three daughters. One of his sons was filled |r the Mr Andrew Thompson, formerly, for mcny years Inspector of Police in charge of tha NorEh Otagi) district and father of Mr F. S. Thompson, of the National Bank, Wellington, died at Oamaru on Saturday at the age of 77. In early life deceased was a member of the Royal li.sh Constabulary. He emigrated to Victoria, and later joined the Otago Provincial police, under the lata Inspector j Branigan, when that officer was commissioned to reorganise the force in that district. The deceased gentleman was probably about the hst survivor of Inspector B r anigan's officers, and formed one of the few remaining links with the early history of the police force of New Zealand. The death is announced of Mrs J. C Chappie, mother of Dr Chappie and Mrs M'Gavin, Wellington, the deceased lady was born i" Glasgow in 1843, andjwent, when little more than a girl,, to Victoria. In 1859 she married, and soon afterwards she came with her husband to New Zealand, settling in Alexandra South, where Mr Chappie became Government land valuer and auctioneer. Some years later Mr Chappie purchased land at Ophir, where he engaged in farming till his death, nine years ago. Since that event Mrs Chappie has resided with one or another of her children, usually ,with Dr W. A. Chappie, of this citv. Dr Chappie was the only son, but there were five daughters, all surviving. They are Miss Chappie, Mrs A. M. Feist (Ohau), Mrs M'Donald (wife of the Rev. T. M'Donafl, Christchurch), Mrs D. J. M'Gavin (Wellington), and Mrs A. Temple (Christchurch).
