The wicket was soft, and the start was delayed a quarter ot an hour. Harrison was dismisse d after adding a single to his overnight score. Four for 100. The century was reached in 115 minutes. Goatley gave an excellent display, the fifth wicket falling at 145. Hitch followed, but Carter snapped up the wicket without any addition to the score. Hiyward lasted 195 minutes, and gave a fine all-round disDlay of cricket. He hit five fours. He gave a hot chance to Laver off bis own bowling, when he had made 71. Seven for 166. The eighth and ninth wickets fell at 171. Smith went in for fearless hitting after lunch, and put on 26 in fifteen minutes. Carter did splendid work behind the stumps. The Australians' second innings was chiefly remarkable for Smith's line bowling. The Ransford-Armstrong partnership lasted 80 minutes, and put on 73 runs. ' The first wicket went at 14, th,e second at 23, and the third at 96. Ransford gave an excellent display, and batted 95 minutes. Armstrong Bhowed sound defence. Four for 115. The fifth and sixth wickets fell at 126. The Australians then declared Iheir innings closed. Hayes and Goatley were Surrey's first pair, and they played out time. The match was drawn.
