THE NORTHERN APPROACH
COUNTY AND BOROUGH COUNCIL SCHEME.
AGREEMENT ARRIVED AT.
A deputation fi"m the Masterton Borough Council waited upon the Finance Committee of the Masterton County Council, yesterday morning, in rjference to the proposed improvement of the Northern Approach. The deputation comprised the Mayor (Mr P. L, Hollinga), Crs Pauling, Ewington, Prentice, Temple and Rigg. The Mayor stated that the Committee appointed by the Boroi gh Council to deal with the matter were of the opinion—(l) That the width of the proposed bridge sho»H be exfeiulcd six feet beyond that shown on the plana of the County Engineer—that is 30 feet; (2) that the level of tho road between the bridges should be raised to that of the bridge floors or as near to that as possible; (3) that in lieu of two footways, one on either side of the road, there be one on the east side only;
After a full discussion it was resolved that the Committee agree to the proposals subject to the Council's approval, and to macadamise the roadway from the Bsrough bridge to the northern termination of the work, also to have the sidewalks curbed and paved throughout.
The Mayor assured the Committee that if these alterations we're agreed to the Borough Council Committee would recommend its Council to adopt the p,lans. At the Council meeting in the afternoon a deputation from the Chamber of Commerce, composed of Messrs G. C. Summerell (President), J. B. Moodie, C. E. Daniell and J. D. Cruickshank, waited on the Council in support of a resolution by the Chamber, favouring only one bridge, instead of two, for the approach. The Chairman of the County Council, Mr W. J. Welch, informed the deputation that the whole matter had heen amicably settled between the two Councils, and that under these circumstances the question raised by the deputation could not be re-opened. He hoped that the town would soon have an approach, which would be a credit to it.
Mr Summerell stated that the deputation were pleased to hear that the difficulty had been finally solved remaiks echoed by other members of the deputation, which then withdrew. The Finance Committee's report was unanimously adopted by the Council, and the Clerk was instructed to take the necessary preliminary steps towards proceeding with the work as soon as official notification Is received of the Borough Council's acceptance of the terms.
