The death of Mr R. Dagg, of Upper Plain, was the subject of sympathetic reference at the meeting of the Masterton County Council, yesterday. The Chairman, Cr W. J. Welch, said that most of the present Councillors would remember the valuable pioneer work done by the late Mr Dagg, who, he said, served on very many local bodies. It was decided to send a latter to the lamily in appreciation of the deceased gentleman's services, and of sympathy at his decease. It was in May, 1856—over 5*3 years ago—that the late Mr R. D. Dagg arrived in New Zealand. He came out in the ship Westminster, and had for shipmates such'well-known district settlers as the late Rev. J. C. Andrews, and the late Messrs Jacob Matthews and Holmes Crane. When he arrived in Masterton the families Masters (after whom the town was , named), R. Perry, C. Dixon, H. Bentley, Woodroofe and H. Cole, were about the only residents. The deceased gentleman was the first Road Board clerk and collector, and in those days the sending out of rate notices was an unknown formality, and Mr Dagg had to make personal calls to receive the amounts due.
