CORRESPONDENCE.
(To the Editor). Sir,—On all sides we read and hear of encomiums bestowed on our Gas Manager. The profits from the gas supply are so overwhelmingly abnormal that they are becoming a tax on ths brain-box of the Council to effectually dispose of this financial flodd. Some suggest the mitigation of taxation or that it be devoted to build a municipal palace. Now, Sir, if this concern is bringing in so much, why in the name of commonsense is the Gas Manager permitted to further embarrass the Council with additional revenue? Last month the gas was raised lOd per 1,000 feet. The discount, formerly 3s 4d per 1,000, is now 2s 6d, an increase to the consumer of Id per 100 feet. It is to be hoped some explanation will be given on this matter. The vaunted surplus is, I am afraid, a myth. I will let matters rest awhile at this, so that candidates in the present contest will probe into the matter.—l am, etc., JOSEPH CULLEN. Masterton, July 12th.
