RACING. V.K.C. GRAND NATIONAL STEEPLECHASE. WON BY BKIBERY. By Telegraph—Press Association. Received July 11, 5.5 p.m. MELBOURNE, July 11. There was beautiful weather yesterday for the Victoria Grand National Steeplechase. The following was the result:— V.R.C. Grand National Steeplechase, 1,500 sovs; 3 miles and 1 furlong. Mr D. J. Price's br g Briberjr, Malvolio—The Gift, aged, 12.11 (Barn) 1 Mr A. L. Wright's b g Confederate, Associate—The Cripple, aged, 10.9 (Ryan) 2 Mr E. Manifold's ch g Squirm, Coil —Cretonne, syrs, 9.12 (Deeble) 3 Also starter! —Kuala Lumpur 12.9, Pilot 12.9, Boisdale 11.12, Workmaster 11.9, Boomerang 11.0, Sriob 10.12, Dalny 10.2, Billiards 10.0, Grafnax 10.0, Postboy 9.12, Quail 9.10, Kyber 9.7, Ripen 9.5, Fred | 9.0. Workmaster and snob led out of the straight, Bribery being the last to move. Passing the bridge Squirm was out three lengths from Pilot. Grafnax took command at the Bride, when Ripon fell. Grafnax maintained the lead into the straight from Fred, Bribery. Postboy and Confederate. Postboy fell at the stonewall. Grafnax lost the lead for a short distance, but regained it at the sheds. Bribery was going easily, and fencing faultlessly. Granfax looked like a winner, but toppled over at the second last fence. Bribery, who had not made a single mistake, then took the lead, and from the distance had things all his own ways, winning eventually by fifteen lengths. Time, 36min 37jsec. TURF NOTES. (By "Zetland.)" Mr Ulic Shannon has been re-ap-pointed handicapper to the Lower Valley Jockey Club. For the meeting to be held on September and October Ist, it has been decided to give the same amount in stakes as at last year's fixture. J. Cooper, Masterton, will shortly put into work a five-year-old gelding by Sou'-wester—Violence. Kelso, who has recently been schooled over hurdles at Tauherenihimself when negotiating one of the jumps, ar.d had to be spelled for a few days. However, his trainer soon got him right, and ha was on the track again on Saturday. Silken Rein, Hilarian, Purakau and Mataari, were worked on the Greytown course last week. The three first-named are being taken to Trentham this morning, where they will be raced on Saturday. Mr R. Knox will be represented at the Wellington meeting by Rose Herald, and Mr W. D. Watson by flirst Consul. This pair and Mr J. Cresa' Pukewhai will compete in the Trial Plate.
The Euroclydon—Liniment filly in W. Garrett's stable has been named Embrocation. The Sir Laddo colt has been broken in, and for a juvenile handles himself very well.
A. Godfrey's team at Featherston now consists of Passive, Waiwareware, Warlock and Royal Maid. Mr C. B. Pharazyn's rising twoyear old filly by Stepniak—Good Intent has been put into work. She is well-grown, of a very compact stamp, and shows plenty of quality. On the track she moves in a very satisfactory manner, and on appearances promises to prove worthy of her breeding.
A recent arrival at Tauherenikau is the Gipsy Grand mare, Grand Myrella, who is now being trained by H. Crawford. The mare will probably compete at the hunt meeting at Clareville next month.
The veteran trainer, I. Freeth, is handling a colt of his own breeding by Knigh Errant—Waitoti. He is a well-grown rising two-year old, and shows both style and quality.
The horse 3 worked at Tauherenikau on Saturday morning were Passive, Waiwareware, Clem, Axite Grand Myrella, Royal Maid, Warlock, Stepniak—Good Intent filly and Stepalong.
Merrie Zealand has been doing satisfactory work at Martinborougiii, and will compete in the Parliamentary Handicap atjTrentham. A three-year-old filly by Bonnie Scotland —Molly Reilly, bred by the late F. Buick, is to be sold by public auction on Wednesday, on account of Mr W. F. Carrick.
