WELLINGTON CITIZENS' RELIEF FUND. By Telegraph—Press Association. WELLINGTON, July 11. The Citizens' Unemployment Relief Fund now totals £SOO. making di 1,000 with the Government subsidy. WHAT THE GOVERNMENT IS DOING. By Telegraph—Pre3s Association. WELLINGTON, July 11. The telegraph account of the interview in Auckland represented tbe Hon.jT. Mackenzie, Minister of Agriculture, to have stated in reference to the unemployment that as increased means became available with improvements in the conditions of the country the State would of course be able to extend its functions as an employer. The Minister says this is at variance with what he stated. His meaning, which was then made quite clear, was that with the increased volume of exports and the corresponding increase in money thereby derived by the producers and manufacturers of the country, a fund would he created large enough to provide work for all the great producing industries of the Dominion. After making the foregoing statement to a "New Zealand Times" representative, the Minister abided that the State was doing a good deal for the unemployed. Over 9,000 people were at pfesent engaged by , the Goverrnent on public works, but the country must real se that there was a limit to the ability of the State to employ. Asked if more men could not be employed on public works, Mr Mackenzie said that he could continue to employ even the present number for the next few years.
