MOST SOUTHERLY QUAKER.
A member of the Society of Friends, Mr Quertier, of Mataura, enjoys the unique distinction of being the most southerly Quaker in the world, says the Mataura Ensign. He is a very old colonist, having: come out from his native place, Guernsey, in the Channel Islands, in charge of the first cattle from that place, which were bought to New Zealand. Mr Quertier, in conversation with an "Ensign" representative, made the interesting statement that Lieutenant Shackleton, the hero of Antarctica, also came from Quaker stock, and is related to the family in Dublin, who are well-known for their interest in the brotherhood.
