Long:), states that the unemployed i position in Auckland is very acute. One thousand five hundred is a very low estimate of the number of men out of work, and as a result of 1 the continued wet weather at present being experienced there is a great deal of distress. A committee has been set up fpr the purposa of arranging a public meeting to deal with the unemployed problem. All the Auckland members of Parliament b,e invited to attend. Work on Victoria College grounds, which are to be prepared for build* ings, will commence next Tuesday, being provided from the Cn'fz&te' Unempldyed Relief Fund The fund is subsidised £1 for £1 by the Government. The Citizens' Unemployed Fund now considerably exceeds £4OO, of further subscriptions. About 300 inen have applied for work. The rate of pay will be 8s per day. The men to be employed 1 by the week. Preference will be given to bona fide resvtents of Wellington, while those having dependents will receive first consideration. Collection boxes will be placed in hbtels and churches will be asked to take up special offerings towards the Relief Fund. Several entertainments in aid of the futfd are likely to be held. The Committee has decided that no men who< have refused work offered by the Labour Department shall be assisted out of the Relief Fund. Among subscriptions received today was a cheque for - £SO from'J. Staples and Co.
