MAYORAL TYRANNY.
(To the Editor). ! Sir,--Judging fay your report of last night's Borough Council's proceedings, and by Cr Hoar's letter, there is sound truth in the remarks of Cr Prentice that the Gas Committee is run by three men. But what is worse, the Borough Council seems to be run by one man, and that man is the Mayor. The proceedings j on Tuesday night disclose a condition of high-handness and unconstitutional business quite repugnant to any right-minded community, and I think that the little tragedy of "local versus imported" will be made a very live memory at next Mayoral election. For a Mayor of a town to ride rough-shod over a decided majority of his Council, and when such an important principle was in issue is a serious and quite intolerable thing. Can the Mayor explain it? —I am, etc., FAIR PLAY. Masterton, July 7th.
