"MANUFACTURING" DIAMONDS.
LEMOINE SENTENCED. Received July 7, 8.25 a.m. LONDON, July 6. Lemoine, on a charge of obtaining money by fraudulently pretending that he could manufacture diamonds, has been sentenced to six years' imprisonment, a fine of £l2O sterling, and banishment for five years. Lemoine was charged with swindling Sir Julius Wernher, the South African millionaire, out of £64,0C0 by pretending that he could manufacture diamonds. He was liberated on bail in order that the formula for the manufacture which Lemoine placed in a sealed envelope, and deposited at the Union of London and Smith's Bank, might be produced. On the court reassembling it was found that Lemoine had fled, and a warrant was issued for his arrest. The mysterious envelope was produced, and was found to contain a few simple ingredients to be subjected to great heat. Experts described the formula as an excellent hoax. Lemoine was missing for a year, and was arrested eventually in Paris in April.
