CLOSER SETTLEMENT.
HAUTOTARA ESTATE. GOVERNMENT URGED TO ACQUIRE IT. By Telegraph—Press Association. WELLINGTON, July 7. A deputation from Martinborough waited on Mr Buddo, Acting Minister of Lands, to-day, urging the s Government to acquire Harris' Hauvj"v .totara estate of 17,000 acres, which been offered at £7 per acre. In reply, the Minister said that the description given of this block as being .mostly grazing country waa somewhat against it. They had Crown land lying idle which had been -repeatedly offered by the Lands Department, but it was not being taken up as expected. He thought the land acquired for closer settlement should contain at least 50 per eeat. of ploughable land. They only point about Hautotara was whether it could carry sufficient settlers to warrant the expenditure, and he would recommend the Land Purchase Commissioner to make a valuation of the proprety and report to the Board. , A
