LAND SETTLEMENT.
A VICTORIAN .BILL. / Received July 5, 10 a.m. MELBOURNE, July 5. The Victorian GoveVnment is preparing a Land Tax Bill, which it is estimated will bring in £400,000 annually. The object of the measure, it is stated, is not to burst up large estates, but to induce a wider use of land for settlement.
,BRAVERY REWARDED.
PRESENTATION TO A MARINE OFFICER. Received July 5, 10 a.m. SYDNEY, July 5. An address and a piece of plate have been presented to Mr Darroch, chief officer of the CJlimaroa, by a number of passengers, in recognition ef his bravery In saving a passenger who fell into the water at Wellington on the vessel's last trip. ; The incident occurred on Friday evening, 25th June, shortly before the Ulimaroa' left for Sydney. A mart named William Graham was reaching over the gangway, and reached too far, an J fell into ths water. The chief officer of the Ulimaroa, Mr Darroch, noticing the occurrence, dived in, and helped the man out. /A line was lowered from the wharf, and rescuer and rescued were drawn to shore.
