PAHIATUA NEWS.

; (From Oar Resident Reporter). Saturday. PAHIaTUA COUNTY, council. The monthly meeting of the Pahiatua County Council was held at the Council Chambers to-day. There were present:—Mr Thos. Hodgins (chairman), and Cr3 R. Smith, •T. Quirk, H. Coom, A. Barrell, H. Cornelius 1 , A. Rosa and J. D. Piper. A letter was read, from the Masterton Borough Council asking the Council to send a delegate to attend a Conference at Mastered! on July 7th to confer upon the, subject of Hospital and Charitable Aid. The Chairman wsa authorised to attend. The Public Works Department wrote stating that assistance- towards the construction of the Te Aupapa bridge would receive favourable consideration when the estimates were being'prepared, but a promise of a grant could not be made at the present time. The same Department also forwarded three warrants, viz., <1) vesting control of the Upper Gorge bridge in the Puhiatua County Council; (2) apportioning cost of maintaining part of Manawatu Gorge road in the Pahiatua County; (3) apportioning cost of maintenance of same road in Kairanga County. Cr Cornelius' notice of motion "That Riding A maintain 'the main road from the Mangatainoka river to the Mangahao river, and that Riding C maintain the main"; road from the Borough boundary to the Eketahuna boundary." was agreed to by the members of the respective Ridings. The same Councillor's notice.of motion, that the constructing and maintaining of all bridges having a thirty-feet span and over to be a charge on the general fund, was lost on the casting vote of the Chairman. , The Health Inspector reported that there was one case of infectious disease in the County. The patient has since been removed to the Hospital. ' The Council decided that a report of the number of -bridges of-thirty-feet span and over in the County be compiled, and laid before the next Council meeting. GENERAL. Messrs Dalgety and Co.. add fresh entries to their stock sale on Tues day "next. . ' There was a good attendance at the meeting of the Literary and Debating Society, last, evening, "impromptu speeches" Being given by several of the members. It was decided to adjourn the meeting until Friday week, so . as* to enable the members to attend - the lecture on "Robert Burns'' in the Presby.teria'n Church on Friday evening.

' Considerable interest was centred in the mile skating race, last evening, the filial of which was won by J. Donaldson, witn half a lap start, Paget (two laps) second, and E*. Morris (half a lap) third., The Pahiatua " Brass Band was in attendance, and played several selections, which greatly added to the evening's amuse : raent. \ To-day is one of the coldest days we have yet experienced thia year. FOOTBALL. The match, between" Pahiatua and ' Konini was played at Konini this afternoon, and resulted in a win for the home team by five points to ail. In the first half the visitors had'the best of the game, the first part of the spell being rather interesting, until rain feli and continued throughout. In tte finish the game was practically a mud scramble. Konini had the uppsr hand in the second spell, athough Pahiatua held their own in the scrums. Konini were frequently penalised for breaches in the' scrums. About halfway through the second spell, Kon in lushed the ball down to the Pahiatua line, and after a short tussle ■ batween both forward divisions, one of the 'home team snapped up the* leather, and transferred it to Bain, at five-eighth, who scored. G. Smith converted. From this on to the end of the" game Pahiatua were kept busy defending their line. For Pahiatua G. Yule, Eccleton, and Short, played well in the backs, W. Farrell, Fairbrother and Weatherley being most prominent in the forwards. Smith Bros, and K. Bam played safe* games for the home team, and the respective full-backs/ Foss s and Dempaey handled a very greasy ball well. Mr G. Chatwir. waß very impartiaKas referee. The matcfi for the Shield

between the Pahiatua and Mangatainoka Schoolboys, on the Jatter's ground, ended, after a, good game in a win for Pahiatua by six points to nil, Richardson and Wilton scoring tries for the winners.
