WATER POWER.

The water power regulations affecting ,Wes>tland recently gazetted continue to excite very warm criticism in that district. The agitation upon the matter should be systematically regarded in all parts of the Dominion, says the Auckland "Herald," for it concerns very materially the future prosperity of the country at large. It is quite true that the natural water power available in our islands is not absolutely unlimited, and that the time may come when it will be found necessary to conserve it scrupulously, but considering that there would be no shortage were our population many times larger than at present, and our national demand for power vastly greater than it is likely to be for many years, it is exceedingly difficult to discover any reason why the Government should load with charges and hamper with onerous conditions the temporary use of water now running to waste.
