Captain Webster, of the Greytown Fire Brigade, has resigned. The Rev. J. K. Elliott has beer, elected Chairman of the Wellington Ministers' Association, for the ensuing twelve months. At the Wellington Navy League's demonstration on Thursday evening, Mr Hugh Beetharn was present, representing the Masterton subbranch."
The Hon. Mr Hwang, Chinese Consul for New Zealand, who has been on a visit to Masterton for the last two days, returned Wellington by the mail train yesterday afternoon. Mr W. Cook, who has been relieving Mr J. B. Henry as manager for the local branch of the Bank of N.Z. has received notice of his transfer. Mr Henry, who has been relieving at Palmorston North, returned to Masterton on Friday evening. The Very Rev. Dr. Kennedy, who is leaving Meanee to take up the Rectorship of St. Patrick's Cellege, Wellington, has received a presentation from his parishioners and others testifying to the esteem he has won during his 16 years' resider.cj in the district.
The following appointments are eazetted:—Mr F. W. Mansfield to be Registrar-General for the Dominion under the Births and Deaths Registration Act; Mr A. D. McGavock, chief clerk in the Lands Department, Invercargill; Mr C. B. Redward, accountant in the head office of the State Fire Insurance Office
The Rpv. A. Whyte. M.A., 8.D., of Havelock North, has bi en nominated, it ia understood, for the vscatit Presbyterian professorship in Dunedin. Mr Whyts is the second New Zealander whose name has been mentioned in connection with the chair. Mr W. R. Haselden, lite District Court Judge, has been appointed a Stipendiary Magistrate, and Chairman of the Licensing Committee of Egmont, Stratford, and Patea. Mr Haselden wes born in England in 1849, and came to New Zealand in 1860. He entered the Civil Service in 1866, and was admitted a barrister in 1872. As Crown Prosecutor at Westport he became well-known on the West Coast. Leaving there in 1839, he took up his residence in Wellington and practised there untill 1897, when he was appointed Stipendiary Magistrate in which position he acted in Wellington and Christ«hurch. He was appointed a District Judge in 1905, and only retired from the position on the abolition of the District Court a few weeks ago.
