CARTERTON NEWS.
(From Our Resident Reporter). Tuesday. The number of entries reeceived by the South Wairarapa Poultry Association for tfieir third annual show, which will open here to-morrow, is 322, being thirty in excess of last year. Entries have been received from Hawke's Bay, Wellington and surrounding districts, and the exhibitors include some well-known breeders. Messrs J. Currie and A. H. Guthrie, of Wellington, arrive this evening, the former to judge poultry, and the* latter pigeons. The annual dinner will take in the evening of the first day's
show, at 9 p.m. The local Tent of the Independent Order of Rechabites, have decided to oppose the proposal of the Friendly Societies' Council to donate £2 of its funds to provide a trophy for card tournaments. While opposing the proposal, the Tent appreciates the desire of the Council in endeavouring to create an interest in friendly ciety mafcters amongst the young members by means of card tournaments, but at the same time considers that the Council is overstepping its duty in attempting to use for promoting amusement. It is the opinion of the members that if the Council fas any surplus funds it' wishes to dispose of, it should consider brethren of the respective Orders who may happen through misfortune to be in distress, and require their contribu-
tions kept good. Considering the time of the tyear, the roads throughout this district are in exceptionally good order. There still remains a large number of untenanted houses within the Borough.
Is it a sign of the times? No less than seven firms dealing m drapery are holding liberal discount sales at tne present time here. The local Dominion Boy Scouts intend to signal messages from Greytown to Carterton instead of running the distance. Scouts will be posted at convenient distances, and signal from one to the other. For this purpose the lads are now practising semaphore signalling under assistant Scout Master A. S. Judd.
Mr J. P. Lomax, of Hamua, one of the provisional directors of the proposed new co-operative meat freezing company, is at present in this district, with the object of making a thorough canvass of the farmers to induce them to take up shares
in the company. A severe gale raged here yesterday. Beyond the wrecking of a few dilapidated fences, and breaking a window or two, no damage of any
consequence was done. Totara Lodge, U.A.0.D., met on Monday evening, Bro. E. Wallis, A.D., presiding. It was resolved to support the proposal of the Friendly Societies' Council to provide a trophy for card tournaments, and a sum of 10s was voted to enlarge the value of the trophy. One new friend was proposed, and two initiated. It was
reported that a brother had been admitted into the Kotorua banatorium. Arrangements were made to play the return card tournament with Stonehenge Lodge on Thursday evening. Bro. P. Ashton was installed a 8 V.A. for the ensuing year.
