ACCIDENT TO A TRAIN.
ENGINE AND THREE TRUCKS DERAILED. A NARROW ESCAPE.
The train from Palmerston North which usually arrives in Masterton at 10 p.m , met with a serious accident, last evening, in the Manawatu Gorge. The engine had just emerged from the tunnel nearest Woodville, and was rounding a curve at a place known as the Limestone Quarry, when the driver, Bertenshaw, noticed a huge block of limestone weighing several tons lying partly across the rails. He immediately applied the brakes, but was unable to avoid a collision, the engine and three tiucks being derailed. The prompt applying of the Wcstinghous? brake averted what would undoubtedly have been a more serious accident, preventing the remainder of the trucks and carriages telescoping each other. The engine was considerably damaged, and the rails torn and twisted.
None of the pafsengers were injured, though they received a shock. After a wait of about two and a half hours—the accident oc-urrvd about 6 o'clock—the passengers wer-z able to proceed to Woodvillu by a relief train, which arrived in Masurton at 11.30 o'clock.
