PAHIATUA NEWS.

Wednesday. The first match fired by the Pahiatua Gun Club for the Whyte-Mackay Cup took place at Mr Geo. Oxley's this afternoon.l The weather was very unfavourable for accurate shootng.and the light was bad. Mr P. Garlick (10 yards) succeeded in geting a leg-in for this valuable trophy, lulling 18 birds out of 21, Mr J. Tanner (14 yards) being second with 17 kills, Mr W. W. McCardle (14 yards) 16 kills, and L. Feist (15 kills) being the next highest. The Woodlands Hunt Club held a ■very succssful ran at "Oete" this afternoon,';! despite the inclement ■weather.™ The ground was slippery anda few spills occurred, but no one sustained any injury. The drag was laid by Mr McTavish, senr., on Lord Ulliu. Those following the hounds -were as follow:—The Master on a pony, huntsman on Maringa, Miss Haran (Miss Hippo), Miss Stewart (Midnight), Miss K. Bolton (Kiwi), Miss B. Bolton (May). Miss G. Bolton (Mon), J. Farrell (Gamefish), W. Naylor (Whip) on Wild Oats. McVilly (Cheero), 0. M .in (Royal Star), G. Gillard (Chance, Master Cox (Rambler), L. Russell (Daisy Bell), W. Falconer on a bay, T. Webb (Black Bush), Barrellon Matai, and J. McNicol on L Kurapapa. At the conclusion of the run the hunters and onlookers were treated to afternoon tea by Mr andj'Mrs Bolton, which was much appreciated. Mr J. C. Cooper will leave for Auckland district to-morrow It is Mr Cooper's intention to address meetings of the various branches of the in tht district. A team of Konini Juniors turned up this afternoon to play t'ahitua team of footballers on the Recreatiion Ground, but only four of the latter put in an appearance, a scratch game was played. The sale of work in the Presbyterian Church was opened this afternoon and will be continued this evening. The local Fire Brigade held a short wet practice last evening, and afterwards met in the Brigade room, when the nominations of officers took place. As there were several nominations for the various offices an election will.be held on Tuesday evening next.
There was a moderate attendance at the long night dance in the Olympic Theatre last evening. Good music was suplied by the Arcade Orchestra. A social in aid of the Hall Funds is to be held in the Ballance Hall next week. As it is some considerable time since a social was held at Ballance, no doubt there will be a large attendance. A Skating Club is about to be formed in Pahiatua.
The unusual long spell of mild weather has now broken, stormy weather being experienced to-day.
