PAHIATUA NEWS.

(From Oor Resident Reporter). Tuesday. r Mr R. E. Moss, M.P., was on a visit to Pahiatmt to-day. Several horses from this district will take part in the jumping competitions at Palmerston North on Thursday next. July 21st, Arbour Day, promises to be a red letter day in the history of the new school. Besides the planting of trees for beautifying the grounds, the school will be officially opened by the Hon. Mr Fowlds, Minister of Education. The memoer of tins district will be present as wed as some of the members of the Education Board. The afternoon will be devoted to speeches by the Minister and others interested, and songs will be rendered by the children. In the evening a social will be held in the Drill Kail. The election of officers in connection with the Pahiatua Municipal Fire Brigade will take place this

evening. It was thought that on Saturday last the championship of the Puketoi Union would be decided between the Rakanui and Pongaroa football teams, but such was not U.e rase, s the same ended in a craw, neither side being able to score. Another match will be played on Saturday week, in all probability at Makuri.

The drag to convey the Bush representative players to Makuri will the Commercial Hotel, at 10 o'clock, on Saturday morning, and players are requested to be readj punctually. A hockey match between the Huia ? s, the newly formed ladies' hockey Club, and the Kotoroa's will take place at 2.30 p.m. to-morrow. -The Kotoroa team is as follows: Misses G. Hughes, J. Wilson, F,. Allen, N. Ingley, 0. Reeve, M. Malcolm, E. Burgess, E. Manifold, E. Little, J. Gilbert and E. Hare. This is the first match the Huia girls have arranged, but they have been practising well, so it is expected they will put up a good fight. The Ground Committee of the • Pahiatua-Akitio A. and P. Association met in the Commercial Hotel, this afternoon. There were present —Messrs J. B. Whyte, chairman, J. G. Brechin, W. Mitchell, A. J. Marson and J. Walsh, secretary. Mrs Cleghorn, of Scarborough, wrote stating she was prepared to receive an offer for ten or twelve cicies of her property adjoining the Pathiatua Railway Station for a show site. Mr A. Yule, Scarborough, offered a site opposite his own residence for rtbs an acre, or one near the Borough bridge at £BO per acre. Captain Whyte informed the meeting that the old racecourse could be secured on a 21 years' lease with the right of renewal. With regard to the present racecourse, the President, Mr Breeds, is convening a special meeting of his committee, to consider the matter, and arrange terms, etc., on which the Racing Club would let the Society have the use of the grounds for Show purposes. As the general feeling of the committee and members of the Association is to hold the initial Show on the Racecourse, owing to its having facilities and accommodation for such a purpose, it was decided [to await 'the of the Racing Club's meeting. , The meeting was adjourned until Tuesday evening next, half an hour before the General Committee meeting.

STOCK MARKET. M essrs Dalgety and Co., Ltd., held their fortnightly salejn their Mangahao Road yards to-day. There was a splendid entry of cattle and a fair entry of sheep, both lines selling well, and we quote as follows Cows in calf, £2'lßs to £4 10s; heifers in calf, £3 10s to £4 ss; 18 month steers, 39s to 445; 20 month to 2 year steers, £2 15s; 3 year steers, £3 2s 6d to £3 18s; weaners, mixed sexes, to 245.- Sheep.—Two and 4 tooth wethers up to 12s 4d; ewes in lamb, 10s 8d to 12s 2d. Messrs Abraham and Williams, Ltd., report on thiir Pahiatua sale to-day as follows:—We had a fair yarding of sheep and a good yarding of cattle. The demand for sheep at auction was not keen, but we ultimately disposed of the bulk of the sheep at good values. We experienced spirited competition for all classes of cattle. We quote: —Two and 4 tooth wethers, lis to lis Od;

a.m. ewes in lamb, lis to lis 6d; f.m. ewes in lamb, 7s 7d; empty ewes, 7s; 3 year steers, £4 7s; 2 year steers, £2 18s 6d to £3 Is 6d; 18 month steers, £2 2s 6d to £2 13s; weaners, 19s; fat cows, and heifers, £3 19s to £4 9s; forward cows and heifers. £2 10s to £2, 19s; fat cows, £3 153 to £4 6s; store cows, 34s to £2 Is; springing cows, £4 19s; springing heifers, £3 17s 6d to £4 15s; empty heifers, 37s to £2 4s 6d ; bull stag, £3.
