THE SCULLING CHAMPIONSHIP.
TO-DAY'S RACE.
By Telegraph —Press Association. WANGANUI, June 21. There is little new to report in connection with the race for the sculling championship, which takes place tomorrow, Last evening was fine and frosty, and the weather promises to' be beautifully fine to-morruw. A large number of visitors arrived on Saturday and though interest is not go great as in former race*, still there will be a big crowd to witness what is likely to be a great struggle. Both champion and challenger have finished heavy work, and will content themselves till the contest with a few hundred yards' row. The champion was visited yesterday, and told his interviewer that he was satisfied with his condition, though he did not have quite the same feeling as prior to his last race, when he felt fit to pull the sides out of his boat. He also said he \va3 not rowing with the same freedom, but nevertheless he was in very good fettle, and was confident that he could win.
Floyd and Fogwell endorse the champion's opinion in regard to his condition, but express no doubt as to his ability to win.
Webb appears to be in the pink of condition, and says he feels qu'te as well as ever he has done, and is sculling as fast if riot faster than ever. Arnst scales 13.3, and the exchampion two stone lighter. At midday to-day, prospects of fine weather seem assured. The glass, after dropping a little during the night, shows an upward tendency, and the snn shines brightly.
The race is timed to sta'rt at 2 1 o'clock, and, allowing for delays at the start, it is anticipated that the bare result will be telegraphed from Upukougaro at 2.30 o'clock. Later. Many people came into town today, and the streets tonight were thronged with the largest crowd seen for some time. Though Industries Week is t" some ext§nt an attraction a great majority of the visitors are here to witness the race for the i sculling championship of the world.
There are indications of rain, though the weather duiing the last two or three daya has been beautiful. Opinions are divided as to the resultof the race. Both parties are very confident, but, taking everything into consideration, it seems safe to anticipate that Webb will win.
