A HORTICULTURAL COMPETITION.

FOR BEST COTTAGE GARDEN.

An interesting and commendable competition to be held under the auspices of the Masterton Horticultural and Industrial Society is the cottage garden competition. The prizes to be allotted for the winners are substantial, and consist of £5 5s donated by Mrs C. F. first prize, £3 3s donated by Mrs J. D. Cruickshank for second prize, and £1 Is donated by Mrs J. Caselberg for third prize. The following conditions have been agreed upon by the Committee of the Society to govern the competition . 1. The section on which the cottags is built to be not larger than quarter acre in area, and permanently enclosed, %. The cultivator of the garden W be engaged in some occupation other than the cultivation of his own garden, occasional assistance only to be permissible. 3. Competitors must be members of the Masterton Horticultural and Industrial Society, and make at least one entry at the Society's show. 4. Judging to be done by puints as follows: -Beauty and general excellence, 30; utility, 15; neatness, 5, 5. Judging to be dona by one judg<§, to be appointed by the Committee. Entries for the competition must .be in the hands of the secretary at least fourteen days prior to the date of the Show, to be held on Wednesday, March 2nd, 1910.
