PAHIATUA NEWS.

(From Our Resident Reporter). Monday. The Methodist Church was crowded last evening, when the Scotch preacher, Mr Charetris, and his son, well-Known as the "Boy Preacher," held services. Mr Charteris conducted the first part of the service, and ths "Boy Preacher" delivered a stirring sermon. A week's . mission is to be held in the Church. The Lower Gorge Bridge, which was opened last week is over 1,000 feet long and rests on cylinder piers which are driven from 40 to G5 feet below the surface, while the decking of the bridge is 30 feet above the or dinary .water level, and some considerable distance above the highest flood level known. It is stated tha the putting in order of the road through the Gorge will not cost so much as has been anticipated, and this will be good news for the ratepayers of the local bodies, who are responsible for the upkeep of this road. The football match for the championship of the Puketoi Union, on Saturday, between Rakunui and Pongaroa, played on the latter's ground, ended in a draw, neither side scoring. The game was a very hard-fought cne, as both teams were equal in Banner points. The next match between the teams should be well worth witnessing. At the meeting of the Woodville Borough Council it was resolved to take steps to re-organise relations hetween the Council and the Fire Brigade, and also to ask the member for the district to urge upon the Government the formation of a sub-way at the Woodville Railway Station. He was one of the best batsmen in the cricket team, and did much to further the interests of football. He was also very popular with the school children. Mrs Woodley, the wife of Mr Albert Woodley, of Konini, died about 4 o'clock, this morning, from the effects of taking rough-on-rats yesterday morning.
