SONG RECITAL AT CARTERTON.
There was a very large attendance at the song recital given by Mrs H. J. Taplay, in the Victoria Hall, Carterton, last evening! The audience was a. most appreciative one, and nearly every item was encored." For the first item, Mrs Taplay, who was in very fine voice, rendered "Melisande in'the Wood," and Miss Hood followed with pianoforte solo "La Fileuse," for which the audience demanded an imperative encore. In the bracketed numbers "Slave Song" and "Indian Love Lyrics," j Mrs Taplay gave evidence of the ; great control which she has over her soprano voice. Mr W. J. Goddard's violin solo was so appreciated that an encore was demanded, for which' he played Mascagni's "Intermezzo." . "Polonaise in A Flat" by Miss Hood was faultlessly rendered. 1 Her execution of this most difficult I piece was all that could be desired. Mrs Taplay sang four other songs, concluding with "Annie Laurie," which was perhaps appreciated most of all, this.song being sung in a very sympathetic manner. Altogether the recital was a decided success from start to finish.
