The Australians' innings closed last night at nine for 139, Whitty, the other member of the team, being absent owing to a slight attack of influenza. There was a heavy downpour of rain all km night, and the pitch to-day was saturated. Play had ; not commneced up to four o'clock, when the weather was fine, and the wicket drying slowly. Play in the Australia-Somerset match was resumed at 4.40 p.m. I The weather was dull and the wicket soft. After fifty minutes' play the bad light necessitated the early drawing of stumps. Hardy ai;d Braund opened the county's second innings. At the close of play the board showed -33 runs for two wickets down. Received June 13, 5.20 p.m. LONDON, June 12. J THE TEST MATCH. LONDON, June 11. The English team for the Second Test Match, which will commence on Monday, at Lords', will be chosen, from the following:— MacLaren, Jonss, Fry, Hirst, Lilley, Relf, Hayes, : King, Haigh, Hobbsy Rhodes, G. Gunn, Tyldesley, and Hayward. The papers criticise the selection for the test match as revolutionary. No one dreamt that Hayes and King would be chosen, and the papers are amazed at the absence of Jessop and Brearley. "What has come over the Austra- '■ Hans?" is heard on every side, and 1 reasonably so, because, with the . team they have, to have won only . four games as against three losses 1 and four draws is a wretched start, j In 1905 their first loss was in the 3 eighth match (first test); in 1902 the . first loss was in the ninth match; i while in 1899 they had only one loss a in the first 21 games., In 18S0 they lost three out of the first nine (five wins), and in 1884 they lost three ' out of the first fourteen (ten wins), these being the worst of previous performances. Therefore it is apr parent that the 1909 combination has made a worse itart than that of any ,i previous Australian team.
