CARTERTON NEWS.

(From Our Resident Reporter.)

Friday. Rumour hath it that a breach of promise cnse is pending in the'Wairarapa. The parties interested are well-knowD in this.town. A meeting of the General Committee of the Poultry Association was held this afternoon. Mr G. Reid (President) being in the chair. The canvassers report was considered highly satisfactory. Messrs T. Vose, C. Drummond, A. Rayner and J. F. Wallis were elected members, and one resignation acceptd. Messrs E. Eagle, D. Reid, H. J. E. Meyrick, and the Secretary, were appointed to allot prizes. Messrs J. M. Nicholls, K. J. Chapman, D. Reid, W. Tucker, J. M. Lightfoot and H. McPhee, were deputed to arrange the dinner. Messrs W. Toomath, C. Reid and W. B. Allen were appointed stewards to assist the judge, and Messrs D. Reid, H. J. E Meyrick, and the Secretary, receiving stewards. It was resolved to meet again on Saturday, June 26th, the day after entries close. Mr E. Eagle, jun., of Belvedere, to-day received the handsome silver medal won by him in the Jersey cattle class at the Manawatu Show. It is of a large design, fairly heavy, and artistically decorated as well as being inscribed. Mr R. Seymour, at one time licensee of the Club Hotel, Carttrton, was a visitor to this town yesterday. A suggestion has been made that the local friendly societies should combine and purchase a shield for competition at card tournaments during the winter evenings. The idea appears to be a excellent' one, and would go a long *y in stimulating interest in the tournaments. I The Hikurangi Maori College, at Clarevilie, closes for the term holiday in a fortnight's time. 'JLhe vacation will extend over five weeks. Girls for domestic dutj6s are at a premium in Carterton at the present time. Good experienced girls are able to command high wages. butter has risen a penny per pound in Carterton, the retail price now being Is 3d. Prices for eggs are ruling high, viz., Is lOd per doz-sn. The last inward mail from Home brought no news concerning the shipment of the new pedal pipe organ for St. Mark's Church. Another boat, which has been delayed on the voyage, is due next week, and probably information will be received by that. _
