COUNTY ENGINEER'S REPORT.
The Engineer to the Masterton County Council (Mr D. McLachlan) reported to the Council yesterday as follows: Opaki Riding. Upper Opaki Goad, contract No. 193. —Fourteen chains of metalling, etc., have been completed, together with eight chains extra. An improvement has been economically made to the filling opposite the gravel pit by raising and widening same from the stripping of boulders carted from the pit. Cost of above £2. Opaki Loop Line, Contract No. 192. —Twelve chains of metalling. The contractor hus been at work since 3rd inst., and he promises to finish forthwith. Opaki District Road and Branch Roads, Contract No. 199. Delivering 410 cubic yards of metal. Good progress is being made with this work; the contractor expects to finish at the end of this week. Miki Miki Road (accrued thirds). —The work let to J. remodelling above road, is reported by him well oil the way to completion. Te Whiti Riding, Waingawa River Protective Works. —As a result of the conference between the committees of the South Wairarapa and Masterton Counties, it was agreed to construct two groynes on the southern bank of the Waingawa. The work has just been completed. Manaia-Gladstone Road. —The dei fective culvert, mentioned in my last report, has been reinstated. Portious of the side drains on above road have j been cleaned with the settlers coI operation. Rangitumau Riding. Te Ore Ore-Bideford Road, Contract No. 198. —Delivering 390 cubic yards of metal. The contractor has been carting during the last ten days. Waingawa to Camp Road, Contract No. 196.—Delivering 700 cubic yards of metal. The work is well on the way, and the contractor expects to completejjthis week. Wainuioru Riding. Blairlogie-East Coast Road. —The contract for painting two bridges, Patanui and Mutuwaireka, is reported finished by the contractor. I will inspect the work following the Council meeting. Homewood-Kaiwhata Road, Contract No. 191. —Fifty-one chains of formation. The work is proceeding. Upper Taueru Riding. Wairere Road. —Mr Wilton's com- ' plaint. I have inspected the bend referred to as being unsafe for vehicular traffic. As the formation is more or less of a temporary nature, I should recommend that a day's carting of boulders into the bend would greatly improve the curve and would meet the requirements for the present.—(The suggestion was adopted). Waihoki Road, Contract No. 183. —Metalling 145 chains. There is yet 12J chains to complete this contract. I have terminated the work for the season. Alfredton-Weber Road, Contract No. 186. —160 chains of metalling. Carting operations ceased at the beginning of last month owing to the lateness of the season, the contractor having then 15J chains to complete his contract. Alfredton-Tenui Road, Contract No. 190. Building a 71 foot span bridge. The work was started on the 21st ultimo, and good progress has been made since. In the case of the Weraiti Road works on contract No. 181, metalling
operation ceased following the last meeting of the Council, the weather having broken rendering the work impracticable with decent results.
