CARTERTON NEWS.

(Prom Our Resident Reporter.) Monday. The offertories taken up in St. •Mark's Church yesterday were devoted to the Maori Mission fund. Quite a large number of swaggers have passed through Carterton of late, the majority of them being aged men. Mr V. Shankland, late of Scotland, has taken over the Ilex Studio, until recently carried on by Mr Washbourne. A wedding of considerable local interest takes place at St. Mark's Church on June 30th, the contracting parties being residents, respectively, of Carterton and Featherston. Mrs J. H. Taplay, teacher of singing, is to give a recital here on Monday evening r.ext. Miss Eva Hood, A.T.C.L., will assist as pianiste, and violin obliagtos will be played by Mr Goddard. . The Clareville Hall Committee are making a big bid to reduce the debt of £6O on their hall. So far they have this season cleared £lO by the means of dances. A benefit dance in aid of the Sewell family will take place to-morrow evening, at Clareville. As the object is a deserving one it is to be hoped the attendance will be a large one. On Saturday evening a vigorous peal was sounded on the firebell, and its continued ringing gave residents the idea that the conflagration was a large and serious one. They were, however, very much relieved to find subsequently that the cause was only a burning chimr.fiy. A well-known Wairarapa drover remarked to me this morning that things were fairly quiet in his line of business at present. "The sheep are in the country," he continued, "but the price offering is not good en-

ough, and the [farmers pre holding on." The Taratahi Water *Kace Com-, mittee have decided not to cut the water off as intended, until a later date, owing to the scarcity. It is probable that the Carterton junior hockey team'will play a team from the newly formed club in Featherston on Thursday next.
