Y.M.C.A. BOY SCOUTS.
DESPATCH RACE FROM CARTERTON. The despatch race run from Carterton to Masterton, yesterday afternoon, by the Boy Scouts of the local Y.M.C. A.- attracted a great deal of notice and great interest was manifested in the result. Promptly at 3 o'clock the first two lads were despatched *rom the Carterton Post Office by Scoutmaster Toomath. Good times were put up on the road by the boys, the total distance being covered by the winning team, in 65 minutes. Of the two boyß stationed at Kuripuni, Eric Chesterman (of No 1. team) was the first to obtain the despatch, and set off at top speed for the Masterton Post Office, wnere a large crowd bad gathered to witness °the finish, His Worship the Mayor also being present to receive the winner. A cheer arose as Scout Chesterman dashed up, at five minutes past four, and he was warmly congratulated by the Mayor. Three minutes later Claude Jarrett, of No. 2 team, put in an appearance, arid made a plucky effort to overhaul his opponent. The winning team consisted of F. Jones, J. Hunter, F. Chesterman, W. Hendry, Roy Tait, V. Davis, W. Peterson, G. Premain, J. Tonquist and C. Hoffeins. The Scouts subsequently assembled at the Y.M.C.A. .Rooms, where tbey were regaled with fruit, etc., by Mr Hollings. Before the lads dispersed thrae hearty cheers were given for the Mayor, and cheers for those who had assisted to make the race a success. Mrs H. Harris and Mr Hollings placed their motor cars at the service of the Association to convey tha scouts, and Mr J. Hunter and Mr E. Collier their vehicles. The silver badges will be presented to the winning team to-night. Yesterday's race has greatly popularised the Y.M.C.A. Scout Troops. The Carterton bcout Troop also held a despatch race from Masterton to Carterton yesterday afternoon, .the. first lad leaving the Masterton Post Office at 3 o'clock. The run was accomplished in 66 minutes with nine runners.
