From Our Resident Reporter. Tuesday. A very heavy frost was experienced at Dalefield this morning. It was more severe than that felt in the northern part of the distrct. Mr W. P, Allen, a former resident of Carterton, and now of Pahiatua, was a visitor to the town this afternoon. Mr A. Armstrong, Mayor, has i convened a public meeting for Friday j evening for the purpose of passing a resolution on the question of umveri sal military training. As the matter interests everyone, there should be a good attendance o± the public. Mr W. P. James, S.M..- presided at the annual meeting of the Licensing Bench to-day, when renewal licenses were granted as follows: Taueru Hotel (three months only to enable certain repairs to be carried out); Blairlogie Hotel (new washhouse to be erected;) Tenui, Marquis of Normanby, Taratahi, Royal Oak, | Gladstone, Greytown Foresters' j Arms. Club, (Greytown), Morrison's ! Bush, Royal, and Club (Martin- ! borough). Transfers were granted las follows:—Club Hotel, Carterton. j from Emma Mosen to G. M. Harden; • Empire Hotel, Featherston. Hanna | Card ti John Tully; Tauherenikau | Hotel, H. Nitz to W. Trail. A wholesale license was granted to the W.F.C.A., Ltd.., Greytown branch. The following are the marks gained by the local candidates in the recent Presbyterian Sunday School Assembly examination: Primary, division: Grace Aplin, 84 per cent, in scripture, and 98 per cent, in catechism. In catechism only, Maggie Compton McPhee gained 99psrcent., and Ivy Mona A. Riggs 75 per cent. Junior division: Catechism, Beryl Gladys Armstrong, 98 per cent.; Jessie Hannah McPhee, 73 per. cent.; Hughie Wilson, 58 per cent. Middle division: Annie Elsie McPhee, 61 percent.; Donald S. Wilson, 73 per cent. The exaimner was the Rev. J. J. Cairney, of Waikouaiti, and the supervisor, the Rev. L. Thompson, M.A., of Carterton. The half-yearly summoned meeting of Totara Lodge, U.A.0.D., was held last evening, Bro. G. W. Hart, A.D., presiding. An application was received .from the eureka Lodge, Hastings, for assistar.es for a distressed brother, and a guinea from fhe benevolent fund was voted to him. The following officers were elected for the ensuing term:~A.D., Bro. E. Wallis; V.A, Bro. P. Ashton; secretary, Bro. H. Hart; treasurer, Bro; E. Martin; 1.G., Bro. J. Gayfer;O.G., Bro. A. Thomas; A.D.B's., Bros. W. W. Mansfield and Baillie; V.B.'s., Bros. V. Fairbrother and R. Smith; auditor, Bro. J. Mon-. crieff. Dr E. W. Smyth was ap- j pointed an additional medical officer of the Lodge. The installation of the newly-elected officers will take place at the next meeting.
