LAND AND POPULATION.
There are practically no Crown lands of any importance open at the present time in any part of New Zealand, nor have any Crown lands, save isolated blocks, principally on the west coast of the South Island, been offered under the optional tenure for many months. The Government possesses, in various parts of the North Island, large areas of good land, admirably suited for close settlement. Instead of these lands being offered on terms that would attract settlers from other parts of the world, they are either obstinately locked up, or only offered in small lots, under such a tenure or at such a price as even the land-hungry New Zealanders cannot accept. In the meantime, instead of population being attracted to these shores and placed in a position to increase the national wealth through farming, some of our own best people are forced to leave this country in order that they may obtain farming land, which is foolishly shut against them in New Zealand.
