THE BUDGET DEBATE. DUTY ON SPIRITS. United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph Copyright. Received May 26, 8.55 a.m. LONDON, May 25. Several newspapers consider that Mr Lloyd-George's estimate of £1,600,000 as the extra revenue derived from the increased duty on spirits is too small. The "Times" asks how a tax can be justified which virtually takes, according to Mr Lloyd-George, four millions from the consumer, but yields to the rational exchequer, only £1,600,000. The "Westminster Gazette" says it would regret an indirect tax which would cost the consumer lid in order to yield the State yd. Mr Balfour estimates the increase in the death duties at the top scale at 57 per cent. Received May 26, 10.35 p.m. LONDON, May 26. The tobacco and petrol duties resolution has been earned.
