(From Our Resident Reporter.) J Wednesday. The local bowling green is to be closed to-morrow afternoon. The tortnightly meeting of the Carterton Y.P.S.C.E. was held in the Methodist Church last evening, and was well attended. Miss Andrews was the leader, and two interesting papers were contributed one by Miss Butler on "The Sevens of the Bible." and the other by Mr S. EJavies on "The Story of tho Cross.. At a business meeting held subsequently a lookout committee and a sunshine committee were set up, Misses Andrews and Feusham being appointed the convenors. The Borough Council met last evening, when the Mayor elect, Mr A. Armstrong, was installed. The treasurer reported a debit balance of 45X16 5s 9d, and accounts amounting to~£2Q9 4s 7d were passed for payment. The gas manager reported having manufactured 291,000 feet of gas during the month, 200,000 feet of Which had been used by consumers. The overseer's report was adopted, showing that the cost oi re-tarring and sanding High Street had been £2l 16s 6d, which did not include 24 barrels of tar used. The Works Com- j mlttee were instructed to report upon 1 the matter of purchasing a road sweeping machine at a cost of £2O, and to furnish a report of the cost of sweepmg High Street by the man and broom method, as in vogue at present. The following committees were set up:—Finance, The Mayor, Crs W. T. Masson, M. La\(ery and T. J- Rathbone; Works Committee, the Mayor, Crs Masson, J. A. DudBon, and C. J. Smith; Domain and Water Race Committee, Crs J. Callister, W. Toomath t and A. fink; Gas Committee, Crs Dudson, W. J. Berrill, Rathbone and Lavery; Carter's Home Committee, Crs Berrill, Smith, and Toomath.
