THE "DAILY MAIL" CUP.

OPAKI CLHB HAVE AN '-OFF" DAY. UNFAVOURABLE WEATHER CONDITIONS. The conditions under which the Opaki Rifle Club fired, at Papawai, yesterday, in their ahoot in connection with the London "Daily Mail's" Empire Day Cup competition were very unfavourable, the light being bad, and the wind gusty and strong, "As soon as we arrived we recognised we had no chance under such conditions," said a member of the Club last evening, "but we gave it a go." List year the Club led New Zealand in the competition with the fine average of 97 for the eight leading nien, but yesterday the average dropped to a hopeless level—9u. The Club was under the disadvantage also of having had no practice whatever for some time past, and therefore the lowness of the scoring is quite to be expected. The only factor which at all pointed to a probably improved performance on last year was the sensationally good combined shooting done by Club members at Trentham, where the Club was very successful. The shooting was supervised by Messrs A. B. Charters and H. P. Perry, members of the Volunteer Forces, Rifleman W, J. Feast generously provided lunch on the range, for the company, and was accorded an appropriate vote of thanks. Following are the highest scores (the first eight counting in the match):—
