The Hon." A, R. Guinness will , again, it is understood, be a candidate for the Speakership. Mr Edward Noye, an old settler in the whaling days, died at Mahia, East Coast, last week. Miss Davidson, probationer at tthe Greytown Hospital has received \ =a simihr appointment at the Wei Vli'ngton Hospital. Rev. Jas. McCaw, of Martinis under call to the Lower ■Hutt Church. The matter will be de•cided at the next meeting of the Presbytery on June 6th. Master Jack Asher, son of the iißev. J. A. Asher, Napier, has won, for the second time in succession, the League of the Empire prize essay open to pupils of the secondary schools of New Zealand. The death is announced of the Rev. :DrSereno E. Bisnop, of Honolulu. He was the son of an early missionary, and had been prominent in the religious and public life of Hawaii for many years. Dr Bishop was 83 years of age at the time of his death. . r Mr Alexander M'Nab (brother of the ex-Minister) who has just returned from Europe, will be a candidate in the Opposition interest for the Wakatipu seat at next election, reports the Tapanui "Courier," as it is stated that Mr Wm. Fraser will not again contest the s°at, owing to •advancing years. Mr M'Nab says that allthe bes: men in England are on the Conservative side of politics, and he intends to don the-"true blue," also, even if his brother sits on the other side of the House. The death occurred at Miriam "Street, Masterton, on Saturday, of -Mr David Ca-.t, who was well-known in Masterton. The deceased, who was a carpenter by trade, was struck with a diill when riding home from Kahumingi a fortnight ago, and an old-standing_internal complaint was revived, which resulted in death. • The late Mr Cant was only thirtyseven years of age, and leaves a wife and three children, for whom the greatest sympathy will be felt. The funeral will leave the deceased's late residence, 26 Miriam Street, at 2.30 p.m. to day.

Mr C. C. Graham, S.M.. who has been conducting the Magisterial duties in Masterlon during the absence of Mr W. P. James, S.M., was the recipient of some flattering references, from the legal profession at the Courthouse on Saturday last. Mr C. A. Pownall stated that as one of the .members of the Bar, he would like to thank His Worship for the .courtesy-extended to them by the Magistrate during his short stay in Masterton. Mr Graham would carry -with him the very best wishes of the legal profession. These remarks were • cordially endorsed by Mr P. L. Hoilings and Mr D. K. Logan, and Mr suitably responded. Mr John Notman died at Wanganui •on last, at the age of 58 years. He was born in London, where he was brought up in commercial life. He left England in 1868, by the ship Portland, ior Auckland, and for fifteerrmonths, in the early days of the " Thames goldfields, resided at Graharristown. Going to Wanganui in 1870, for seven years he was employed on the staff of the "Herald." In 1877 he entered into partnership with the late Hon. John Ballance, • snd continued one of the proprietors of the "Herald" until 1882, when he established a commercial business. At various times he was secretary of i the Wanganui Harbour Board, Deputy < Official Assignee in Bankruptcy, a . member of the Wanganui Corporation, and also of the Education ; Board.
