MASTERTON CHAMBER OF COMMERCE.
MONTHLY MEETING OF ( COUNCIL. ( The monthly meeting of the Council of the Masterton Chamber of Commerce was held yesterday afternoon. There were present:—Messrs G. C. Summereil (Chairman), F. W. Carey, E. H. Waddington, J. D. Cruickshank,'V. Donald, Wynn-Wil-liams, A. Henderson, J. C. Ewington. The Treasurer reported a credit balance of £8 8s 9d. A British Chamber of Ccmmerce established in Barcelona, Spain, forwarded a circular appealing for support. The letter was received. The Wellington Chamber of Commerce wrote forwarding a resolution passed by the recent Conference at Wellington drawing attention to the Congress of Chambers of Commerce throughout the Empire, to be held in Sydney" in September, and urginS that each Chamber should make a special effort to be represented at such Congress as a recognition of the importance of the occasion. The Chairman moved that Mr Donald Donald be appointed to represent the Masterton Chamber. — Seconded by Mr Ewington and carried. Mr S. Comrie, Secretary of the recent Conference of Chambers in Wellington, wrote to state that a draft would shortly be forwarded of a proposed constitutition for a conferacy of the New Zealand Chambers of Commerce, in pursuance of a suggestion from the Conference. Mr W. G. Beard for.varded a copy of the resolution recently passed by tl.e Law profession of Masterton re sittings of the Supreme Court at Masterton, in which it was affirmed that a deputation, assisted by the ..Chamber, wait upon the Minister for Justice regarding the samp. ; The Hawera Chamber of Commerce forwarded a resolution protesting against the abolition of the District Courts in various parts of New Zealand, and asking • the Masterton | Chamber to endorse the resolution. | The Chairman said the matter of continuing the sittings of the District Court at Masterton was an important matter indeed, and either it j should be continued, or sittings of j the Supreme Court established. The coming sittings of the District Court would be likely to last a week, and j the number of witnesses would be J very large. He thoroughly approved j of the legal profession's resolution, and moved that the Chamber cooperate in the movement inaugurated by the solicitors of Masterton. Mr Donald seconded the motion> which was spoken favourably of by all present, and carried unanimously. It was decided that the Chairman represent the Chamber on the deputation. It was resolved to acknowledge the letter of the Hawera Chamber and inform them of the rction being taken in reference to establishing Supreme Court sittings at Masterton. A report from the Wainuiiurau "Press" bearing on the question of the proposed I a3terton to Waipukurau Railway, \ a Pongaroa, was read, in which the account of an enthusiastic meeting of Waipakurau residents was contained. Mr Cruickshank gave a brief resume of the proceedings at th« recent Conference of Chamber delegates at Palmerston North for improved railway facilities. Mr Cruickshank said great enthusiasm was shown, and the various resolution published in the local papers were carried unanimously. Mr Cruickshank was accorded a vote of thanks for his services at the Conference, and was appointed to th 3 deputation set up to wait upon the Minister in support of the resolution passed at the Conference.
