Mrs H. J. Taplay underwent an operation for a throat affection at Wellington, yesterday. She will not return to Masterton until Monday. Miss Wolfe, infant mistress of the Masterton District High School, has been suffering for several days past with an illness which has prevented her from attending her duties. Mr Arthur Schofield, who had a spill off the well-known hunter "All Black," at the B'lairlogie hunt a week ago, is still confined to his bed, having broken two ribs, writes our Tenui correspondent. A cablegram was received in Masterton, yesterday, from Lordon, by Mr W. H. Beetham, stating that Mr G. Beetham (a one time member for the district) had met with a serious accident while motoring from bis home to Exeter (England), a..d that but little hope was entertained for his recovery. Commissioner Reea has been appointed to succeed Commissioner M'Kie in the superintendence of the Australasian Solvation Army forces. The new ccmmisMoner has been an officer of the army for 27 years, having held in that time many important posts. Commirsioner M'Kie, •who gees to Sweden, has just received news from England of the death ot his mother. The"Wyndham Farmer" reports the death of Mr Edward Wild, a settler in the Mimihau district, for over 30 years. Mr Wild's age was 77 years. In his younger days he was a somewhat rotable musician, his instrument berg the cornet. While atill quite a young man, he became bandmaster of the leading Wiltshire Band; refused the post of solo cornet h one of the Guards bands; and for some time.held a lucrative engagement as solo corret player in the world-famous Wombwell's Circus. Soon after his coming to New Zealand towards the close of the 60's, he went to the Dunstan gold rush, and there became bandmaster of the Dunstan Band, one of the finest institutions of the kind formed in Otago.
