PAHIATUA NEWS.

[(From Our Resident Reporter). Saturday. GENERAL. Mr H. T. Ellingham, of Horoeka, who is a candidate for a seat on the Wellington Land Board, addressed a meeting of Crown tenants, at Mangatainoka, on Thursday.'evening. Mr G. R. N. Mackie, the President of N.Z.C.E.U., arrived in Pahiatua by to-day's express on a visit to iriends, prior to his leaving for India, to attend the world's meeting of the C.E. Convention. There was a good attendance of members at the FahiatuaLiterary and -"Debating Society's weekly meeting in the Foresters' Hall last evening. - The subject for the evening was "Impromptu Speeces, "and several of those present gave very neat and Instructive speeches. Aboutlso ladies and gentlemen at- ,. tended the ball in the Olympic Theatre, test evening, held under the auspices of the Kotoroa (ladies) Hockey Club. The body of the hall was tastefully decorated with ever- ' greens, flags, mirrors and hockey sticks and a good deal of time and expense had been expended to prepare the floor, which was in excellent ordar. Mr Handley, of Pi 1 nerston JNorth, supplied good music (piano), and extras during the supper adjournment were played by Mrs Mal- . colm, Mrs Norton, Miss Burgess and Mr Hutton. Mr Osburn-Lilly made a capable M.C. A noticeable feature of the dance was the number of pretty dresses worn by the ladies present. A word of praise is due to Miss F. Allen and Miss L. Hughes for the splendid work they did in making the function the success it was.

FOOTBALL. The Mangatainoka School boys defeated the Pahiatua District High School boys by 7 points to 3. Tatare potted a goal, and Boyden scored a try for the winners, while Early crossed the line for the losers, Hukanui forfeited to Hamua owing to their not being able to get a team together. The match between Mangatainoka and Pahiatua, on the Recreation Ground, this afternoon was a much better game than was expected, and at times was fast andlnteresting. In the first spell Pahiatua, with the wind against them, had to defend their line frequently, and manyscrums were held in their 25's, Col- ' lins saved them on several occasions *by his clever play. Neither side scored in the first spell. At the start of the second spell Pahiatua rushed the ball down to the Mangatainoka line, but attempts to . score were fruitless, and E. Harvey by "good following up took the ball well, up the field. Both teams then livened up, and Managtainoka forwards, talcing the ball with them over the line, an almost certain try was saved by Morrison. Play was again transferred to Mangatainoka territory, and the latter team was compelled to force down three times in succession. The ball then went up and down the field until Eccleton'marked in a good position,, and Yule drew first blood for Pahiatua by kicking a good goal. Mangatainoka then went to work in real earnest, and ;by good

following up, and through bad play by the Pahiatua backs, E. Harvey scored, and H, Cowan kicked a splendid goal against the wind. Play became fast and exciting, Pahiatua making desperate efforts to score, but the defence of the opposing fullback was too good. Near the end of the spell Lyle and Harvey were associated together in a forward dribbling rush, and passing the Pahiatua backs the latter again touched down, Cresswell failing with the kick. Shortly after the whistle blew with the ball in Mangatainoka ter, rity, Mangatainoka thus won by 8 points to 3. In the winners' bask division Cowan, at threequarter, was very safe, fand the others all played well. Maxted, at half, saved his side on several occasions. Dungan, Lyle, Pilkington and Harvey, showed up well in the forwards, and Cresswell was good on the line out. The Pahiatua forwards played a better game than was expected of them, and held their own in the scrums and lino out. B. Yule at half, and T. Collins, were probably the pick of the backs. Pahiatua showed the want of combination, and in this respect Mangatainoka deserved their win, as they have been training hard for some time, and showed good combination.

If Pahiatua wHI orrly practice, they will be a very hard ieam to beat. Mr George Smith was referee, and gava every satisfaction. The Nireaha and Konirri teams met on the Konini ground, being won by Nireaha by 8 points to nil-after a good game. The score consisted of a converted try, scored by Trengrove, and a penalty goal. Mr Chatwin was referee.
