WAIRARAPA RUGBY UNION. SATURDAY'S GAMES. The fixtures under the auspices of the Wairarapa Rugby Union were commenced on Saturday last. The rain of the previous few days had made the grounds very, soft, and during the progress of several of the matches heavy showerd of rain fell. Consequently a scientific exposition of the game was out of the question, the matches very often reverting into a tussle between the opposing forwards. SENIOR CHAMPIONSHIP. CARTERTON v. GREYTOWN. The Carterton and Grey town teams met at Carterton. It was generally anticipated that Carterton would have an easy win, but so well did Greytown play that l?st year's champions only secured a victory by 8 points to 6, and then Greytown had crossed Carterton's line twice, while the wearers of the maroon were only able to score one try. For the winners N. McKenzie scored a try, which H. McKenzis converted. Tho latter also kicked a penalty goal. For Greytown Skeet and Allan scored tries, neither of which were converted.
GLADSTONE v. LOWER VALLEY. A keenly fought game was witnessed at Greytown between the Lower Valley and Gladstone teams. There was nothing particularly scientific about the play, which was confined mostly to the forwards. In the first spell the score was three all, Gladstone gaining the winning try in the second half, the final scores being—Gladstone 6 points, Lower Valley 3 points. D. Thompson and RangJ scored tries for the winners, and Sullivan for Lower Valley. Sid. Mason and Momo did the best work for Gladstone, and Cowan, Quaine and O'Callaghan for the losers. Mr A. B. Charters made an excellent referee, his decisions being given with a firmness and promptness that goes to make the ideal referee.
JUNIOR CHAMPIONSHIP. RED STAR v. CARTERTON. Red Star had a somewhat easy victory over Carterton on the Showgrounds, though Carterton in the second spell with the wind in their favour, were within the ace of scoring]on more than one occasion. All the scoring was done in the first spell, viz., 13 points by the home team. Tries were scored by G. Rcss, Ball and Wing, the two latter tries being converted by Clarke with splendid kicks. Of the winner's backs, Ross, Wing and Ball were the
pick. The forwards played a dashing: game, Billington, Millar, Welch, ■, Allen and Clarke being probably the most conspicuous. For Carterton, Fairbrother, Thomas, Blake and Carmine, were the pick. Mr C. J. Mackellar gave every satisfaction as referee. DALEFIELD v. GREYTOWN. Dalefield Juniors defeated Greytown Juniors, at Dalefield, by 23 points to nil. THIRD-CLASS CHAMPIONSHIPS RED STAR v. DALEFIELD. Red Star defeated Dalefield (playing 12 men) by 40 points to nil on the Showgrounds. The score at halftime was 9 points to nil. Tries were scored by Boyd (3), Berry (2), Mor-i ris (2), Welch, Yates, McKenzie* Mason and Treen, two being converted by Morris and Berry, respectively. Mr T. Fielding was referee. MASTERTON v. TE OKE ORE. Masterton had a runaway victory over Te Ore Ore, on the Schoolgrounds, winning by 55 points to miMr A. Harding was referee. CARTERTON v. HIKURANGI. Carterton defeated Hikurangi, at Clareville, by 28 points to nil.
