AUSTRALIA v. ESSEX. A DRAWN GAME. LONDON, March 14. The match was resumed to-day. The weather was bitterly cold and gloomy, the wicket, despite rain during the night, was hard. The attendance numbered under a thousand. After forty-five minutes' play the match was stopped by duskines, and steady rain commenced. Armstrong and Macartney, the two not-out men, continued the innings of the Australians. Both batsmen played lively cricket, Armstrong's fine free cutting and Macartney's attractive style finding much favour with the spectators. Macartney gave a chance to Fane in the slips when he had made 16. With'the score six wickets for 609, the Australian captain declared the innings closed. Bowling analyis.— Cotter, three wickets for 62 runs; Whitty, three for 28; Macartney, two for 15; Armstrong, one for 23; Noble, 0 for 4. Received May 16, 4.30 p.m. LONDON, May 15. The weather was bitterly cold, but brighter, when play was resumed. The wicket was hard. The third wicket fell for 60. A'fine partnership was then established between Fane and Perrin. Both played carefully till lunch. On resuming the play was brighter, Fane driving and cutting finely. Perrin, who gave a char.celess display during the 110 minutes at the wicKet, was taken smartly by Cotter at mid-off. Fane notched hi 3 century in 173 minutes. He played forceful cricket on the off side. MeGahey scored quickly, hitting 10 off Noble in one over. The fourth wicket fell for 172. Fane was taken in deep field by Ransford at the third attempt. He played a chanceless innings lasting 185 minutes and hit fifteen fours. The fifth wicket fell at 273. Gillingham played a vigorous innings. At the call of time Essex had lost 9 wickets for 344 runs, and the match was drawn. The following were the scores:— ESSEX.—Second Innings.
