EMPIRE DAY.

By Telegraph—Press Association. OHRISTTCHURCH, May 15. A public holiday en Empire Day (24th inst.), optional to shops and factories, has been proclaimed by the Mayor. At present the only attempt at a public celebration is that arrangements have been made for addresses to public school cadets, who will parade at the King Edward Barracks and march to the statue of Queen Victoria. The Mayor favours a patriotic gathering, and will-try to arrange one. He says we should not allow this day, with its many pariotic associations, to fizzle out.
