THE MONEY MARKET.

The money article of the "New Zealand Trade Review," published yesterday, shows that during the quarter ended 31st March, the New Zealand exports exceeded imports in total value by some three millions, accounting for the improvement exhibited by the bank returns for the same period, amounting to two millions inclusive of the Government account. The change for the better in private accounts amounted to £1,767,000. "These figures," states the "Review," "represent, of course, the averages for the three months, and we are therefore justified, we | think, in anticipating that some further benefit may accrue to the banking returns for the current quarter from the £3,000,000 excess of exports. The June quarter often yields a moderate excess of exports over imports, but the September and December quarters compose the off season for exports and the imports are practically always in excess in those periods. We anticipate that the current quarter will make an unusually good showing in this respect as the exports ot meat and dairy produce will both be above the average for the season, while in imports we fully expect to see continued shrinkage, probably to the end of the year. Exports of grain will also take place beyond anything that we have had for some years."
