POLITICS, LABOUR AND SPORT.

The ex-member for Avon, Mr VY. W. Tanner,, in acknowledging a presenation made to him by his late constituents, said that while he admitted Labour had a great deal of leeway to make up a couple of decades ago, it had achieved a great deal, and could achieve a great deal more by unity, fixity of purpose, and moderation. It was necessary that every section which wished to be represented and to have its influence in the Legislature of the country should keep itself well informed regarding the current of human affairs, and he thought it was a great pity that the study of modern history and the social conditions of the country in which we lived were not included in the school curriculum. The State

needed thinking; capable citizen now as much as it did at any period of its history. He was not antagonistic to sport, but he thought sport and amusement took far too much of the spare time of the young people, who in the courpe of a few more years were going to be the electors, and so the rulers of this Dominion.
