HOCKEY.

MAJOR CUP COMPETITION. W.F.C.A. v. KNOX. A match was played on the Showgrounds yesterday afternoon, between the W.F.C.A. and Knox team?. The ground was heavy on account of the recent rain. The following were the teams:— W.F.C.A.— Goal, Hall; full-backs, Hendry and Smith; halfbacks, Richards, Scrimgeour, Grange; forwards, Hatch, Minett, Pragnell, Dickson, Whitt. Knox.—Goal, Morris; full-backs, Dixon and Boyd; halfbacks, Archer, Gordon and Wilson; forwards, Thompson, Gray, Griffith, Reynolds, White. Knox won the toss, and W.F.C.A. defended the grandstand goal. W.F.C.A. forwards set up a determined attack on Knox goal, but Wilson removed play to half way. The ball travelled from one end of the field to the other for some time, then W.F.C.A. forwards, headed by Whitt and Minett, put Knox on the defensive, and play hovered round the goal. Knox's defence was heavily taxed, but Wilson, Gordon, Dixon and Gray each in turn'staved off the determined rushes of the Reds, and play centred. Each side then had its turn at defending, W.F.C.A. losing more than one good chance through bad shooting.The spell finally ended with W.F.C.A. having had somewhat the best of play. From the commencement of the second sell W.F.C.A. forwards,again attacked the Knox goal, some clever passing between Richards, Minett. Pragnell and Whitt taxing the defending team to the utmost. Dixon, Boyd and Morris were noticeable at this stage for good defensive play. Twenty-fives followed twenty-fives, and it looked as if the Reds must eventually score, but some tricky play by Gray, Griffith, Wilson and Reynolds relieved, and W.F.C.A. were put on the defence. Hall cleared from a dangerous rush in fine style, and Hatch and Minett carried the ball on, but Thompson and Wilson

drove them back. W.F.C.A. cleared their line again,*and for the remainder of the spell had the upner hand, time sounding with the Reds attackThe game ended in a draw, ing vigorously in the circle. W.F.C.A. had the best of play, but their shooting was poor. They showed better combination than Knox. The defence of the latter team was really good. Mr Noble-Campbell made an excellent referee.

Owing to the inclement weather yesterday, all the matchhes to have been played "under the auspices of the Wairarapa Ladies' Association were postponed, and will be play d next Thursday. JUNIOR CHAMPIONSHIP. KNOX v. CARTERTON. The Knox Juniors scored a creditable win against Carterton, at Carterton, yesterday afternoon, winning* by 2 goals to J. Berry and Barry scored for Knox and Dudson for Carterton. Mr O'Meara was referee. W.F.C.A. v. CARTERTON B. W.F.C.A. Juniors had a runaway victory over Carterton B on the Showgrounds, yesterday afternoon, winning by 6 goals to nil. Iggulden (2), Parker, Byrn, La Roche and Johnson, scored the goals. Mr Rossen was referee.
