CRICKET.
AUSTRALIA v. NORTHAMPTON. Received May 11, 8.45 a.m. LONDON, May 10. The Australian cricketers began a match against Northamptonshire to-day, at Northampton. The weather was dull. There was a moderate attendance. The County captain won the toss and elected to bat on a good wicket. A poor start was made, the first two wickets being down for 18, and four for 56. Vials played good legside cricket, but gave a chance to Bardsley at slip off Colter when his score stood at 7. At luncheon the score stood at five for 75.
Wells was sixty minuSes at the wickets. He gave a good display of vigorous driving and pulling, but finally returned a hot one to Armstrong, which the bowler held. A smart return by Ransford was responsible for East's dismissal. Thompson played a sou 3d. steady game. He bated 140 minutes, after giving a chance to Carter at the wickets, off O'Connor, when he had made 4. The seventh wicket fell for 142, the eighth for 168, and the ninth for 181. Received May 11, 5 p.m. LONDON, May 11. Hartigan' lost his wicket in attempting to play back to a ball from Smith. His score included three fours made off the second over he received. The first wicket fell at 67, and the second at 101. Noble's innings lasted 70 minutes. His runs were mostly the result of late cuts. Smith disposed of O'Connor and Carter with successive balls, the latter succumbing to the first delivery. The fourth wicket fell at 122. Bardsley played free and faultless cricket, and was especially strong on the leg side.
