THE WAINGAWA RIVER.
IMPORTANT COMMUNICATIONS. ACTION BY MASTERTON COUNTY COUNCIL. At the meeting of the Masterton County Council, yesterday afternoon, two important communications were received in connection with the encroachment of the Waignawa river. The first was from Messrs D. Mc Gregor, G. T. Dagg, and F. Hood, stating that at a meeting of settlers held recently at the Upper Plain, they had been appointed a committee to watch the Wainagwa river and report if, at any time, it tbreaterded to overflow in the direction of Masterton. Two substantial groynes had already been constructed, and the writers were of opinion that willow planting for at least twenty chains would prove a cheap and effective preventive. They asked the Council, in conjunction with the Borough Council, to give the matter their consideration, and they would be pleased to supply any information in connection with the matter. The Wairarapa South County Council also wrote, stating that at their last meeting a committee consisting of three of their members had been appointed to confer with a like committee of the Masterton County Council as to the danger of the Waingawa river encroaching on the approaches to the bridge, and geneially to discuss the question oi protective works at the river, They suggested that the committees meet at the Waingawa bridge at 10 a.m. on May 19th, for the purpose of discussing the niatte?*
The chairman said the river wat.' fairly well protected on the Masterton side, but it appeared to be giving trouble on the other) side of the bridge. After some discussion, it was decided that a committee, consisting of Crs Wekh, Foreman, Morris, and Miller, make an inspection of the river regarding Upper Plain, and
that the same committee also meet the representatives of the South WalrarapagCcunty Council on the date suggested, and that they bo given ; athority to take whatever action was deemed advisable.
